Both breeds can be trained to get the ducks for you. Those are the two hunting dogs, and are really the intention? N to find the game, and poultry.

The Brittanys desire to please and work mean they are excellent at pointing, retrieving, agility and obedience. As with all Springers this is a breed that needs plenty of exercise in the open air, you should only consider taking on this breed if you can provide this much needed exercise on a daily basis. Britannys who lack this type of stimulation can become hyperactive and destructive so, for the well being of the dog, you must provide the stimulation it needs.

These dogs have been bred specifically for this job over the years. They’ll be perfect for it. A few other game dogs that are smaller than labs are German Shorthaired Pointers, Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retrievers, and Setters. You can find more information on these dogs and others that can be trained like this by clicking the link below. Happy hunting!

Both of the breeds you mention were bred for upland bird hunting (i.e. not water). I have known dogs of both breeds that were successful waterfowl retrievers, but a better fit for your goals would be a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievr or an American Water Spaniel – both breeds about that size that are designed and bred for waterfowl hunting. Both are rarer breeds, but well worth the effort to find, they are most popular in the Upper Midwest. In the south, a Boykin Spaniel may be easier to find and that should also fit the bill.
Good luck!
