A Flea-Free Dog Starts With a Flea-Free House

One of the best ways to secure your dog’s well being is to ensure they are free from parasites such as fleas. This will benefit not only your dog but you as well, since for proper hygiene to take place not only your dog needs to be clean, but your own house needs to be sanitized and free of parasites as well.

Fleas for example, are among the most harmful and annoying pests to have around. They are small, hard to detect and to kill and what is worse; they will suck the blood from your dog and make them itchy. This can cause them to scratch so hard that sometimes they will hurt their own skin to the point of making it bleed, not to mention the fact that fleas might carry some nasty diseases that might infect your dear four-legged friend.

The problem though, is that in order to prevent dog parasites (including fleas), flea-control companies have taken some quite strong measures when it comes to their products. This in turn, has caused some flea-control chemicals to be harmful not only for your pet, but for you as well.

So, when using any kind of flea control chemical or spray, it is highly recommended to apply only small quantities in levels lower than what is suggested as to not endanger your pet or other members of your family.

Here is some advice in order to get your dog (and your house) as clean and flea-free as possible:

The first (and obvious) piece of advice is to get your residence as clean as possible. You should thoroughly clean and sanitize each and every spot used by your dog, especially their eating and sleeping areas. Pay close attention to any cupboards and closed places near the areas your dog usually transits as well, as they are the perfect place not only for fleas, but for many kinds of insects to breed. And while you are at it, make sure to wash all of your dog’s beddings as well.

Now, if you ever wondered why when having two dogs, one of them is the only one that fleas seem to target, the answer can be surprisingly simple. It is due to one quite overlooked factor that can make your canine friend more prone to fleas and other parasites: Poor skin care. An overly dry skin provides the perfect breeding ground for fleas to easily multiply. Thankfully, the best way to prevent this problem from happening is equally effortless: To control your dog’s diet and feed them in a healthy way.

Lastly, another important element to consider is your dog’s grooming. This is where you can use some natural herbs and fruits to combat parasites. Lemon and especially garlic are very effective for this purpose and even if they might produce strong smells in the short term, they guarantee to keep your dog absolutely flea-free.

To sum it all up, if you do use sprays or other chemicals to protect you dog from fleas, make sure to always apply them outdoors as to prevent the odor and chemicals from spreading all over your house. Also, even though it may seem obvious for some, it is good to remind you that when it comes to cleaning and sanitizing your house, this cannot be a one-time only cleaning. On the contrary, it has to become a new habit applied to the whole process of raising your pet. You will be glad and safe, and of course, your dog will be thankful.
